Located on Minzhu Road, Wuchang, Wuhan, Central Southern China Electric Power Design Institute, a subsidiary of China Power Engineering Consulting Group, was founded in 1954. As a modern technology-oriented enterprise focusing on electric power survey and design, the Institute currently boasts 1175 employees, of which there are one state-level design master, 79 professor-level senior engineers, 336 senior engineers, 303 engineers and 262 Charted Professional Talents.

Central Southern China Electric Power Design Institute has such qualifications as engineering design of power industry (Grade A), EPC project contracting, comprehensive survey, engineering project management, project supervision, project consultation, cost consultation, environment impact assessment, architectural engineering design, tender offering agency of construction projects, special fire protection engineering design, engineering design of intelligent building system, compilation of soil & water conservation proposal of development and construction projects, project of geologic hazards prevention, risk assessment of geological hazard as well as qualification certificate for foreign economic cooperation and qualification certificate for import and export enterprise. In 1995, the institute was awarded the management qualification for state first level scientific and technical public institutions, passed the ISO9001 Quality Management System Authentication; in 2006 won the authentication certificate of Environment Management System which covers EPC contracting and certificate for Occupational Health，Safety and Environmental Management System. The enterprise credit was once again appraised as Grade AAA in 2006. CSEPDI boasts advanced computer network and three-dimensional design system, global positioning system （GPS）, digital photogrammetric system and other advanced instrument, equipment and technology such as environmental testing, engineering geology, printing and publishing etc.

Over the past 50 years, CSEPDI designed generation, transmission and substation projects in more than 20 provinces and municipalities and over 10 countries. By the end of 2006, generation projects designed by CSEPDI was over 100, the total capacity of which exceeded 29140 MW, of which there were five generation units the capacity of which was 600 MW or above, 63 generation units the capacity of which reached 300 MW; substation projects designed by CSEPDI reached more than 130, the total capacity of substation reached 47440 MVA, of which there were fifty-four 500kV or above substation projects; more than 200 transmission projects were designed and completed. The total length of line exceeded 24000 kilometers, of which 500 kV and above lines reached 18600 kilometers (accounting for 1/4 of the whole country’s). With the global economic integration, CSEPDI bases itself on the domestic market and also strives to explore the international market, carries out exchange and cooperation with world-famous companies, designs EPC projects so as to explore the market jointly and realize complementary advantages. The “Going out” strategy widens the enterprise’s horizon, enhances the enterprise’s strength, and raises the fame of CSEPDI, which creates favorable conditions for accelerating CSEPDI’s keeping in line with international practices, thorough implementing of international cooperation and exploring the international market.

Resorting to tremendous technical strength and pioneering spirit, CSEPDI continuously sets up precedent in China’s electric power survey and engineering design sector, has created many firsts in the history of electric power design: the first power plant project with domestic-manufactured 300 MW generation units, the first 100 MW gas and steam combined cycle power generation project, the first 220 kV and 500 kV long-span Yangtze River crossing project, the first 500 kV AC power transmission project, the first ±500 kV DC transmission project, the first ±500 kV converter station, the first digital microwave communication project, the first 500 kV green and environment-friendly line, the first BOT project in the electric power system, the first EHV sea-crossing AC interconnection project etc. CSEPDI made great contribution to the development of power industry in New China.

Adhering to the philosophy of “surviving on quality and developing through science and technology”, CSEPDI carries out the establishment of excellent projects, actively implements optimized design and quota design, constantly strives for perfection and has made excellent achievements. The project survey and design was awarded 16 State Excellent Project Design medals (including 10 gold medals), nine State Excellent Survey medals, 10 State High-quality Project medals, 8 State-level Project Consultation medals, two National Excellent Project EPC medals and five national patents. CAD and MIS software was awarded 22 State Excellent Project Design Software medals; QC team was awarded 13 National Excellent QC Team medals and 15 State Project Construction Excellent QC Team medals.

Since 1993, CSEPDI was continuously appraised as one of the top 100 survey and design units in China, ranked 14 on the list of “double top 60 enterprises of 2006 Chinese contractors and project design ” conducted by Engineering News-Record (ENR for short), and won such honorable titles as benefit-by-quality advanced enterprise in China’s power industry, “advanced collective of central enterprises” by State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, one of the first top-ranking electric power design enterprise, double civilized unit of China’s electric power companies, double civilized unit of Central China electric power system, the best civilized unit of Hubei Province, the best civilized unit of Wuchang District, advanced collective of Three Gorges project construction etc.

During the development and perfection of the enterprise, CSEPDI constantly optimizes its business structure. To promote the transformation to a company focusing on survey, design and project EPC contracting, CSEPDI attaches great importance to the exploration of EPC contracting market of power industry, gasps the present favorable opportunities to enlarge and strengthen the EPC industry. The second 110 kV substation project of Wuhan Petroleumical Factory, Guizhou-Guangdong 500 kV AC transmission and substation project and 500 kV Hezhou substation project were awarded project EPC contracting silver and bronze medals
